let's clean the red sea
The Abu Salama Society & the National Parks of Egypt have joined forces to start a programme of
underwater cleaning.  By enlisting a team of volunteer divers, snorkelers and helpers, and the co-
operation of the Hurghada diving centres and hotels, the programme will operate on two levels:

LEVEL 1:  Offshore Areas.
One of the biggest problems is the areas offshore of the beaches, on the home reefs and in the
marinas.  Debris and rubbish from the sea and land is being brought into these areas by wind and
currents and is settling underwater.   In these areas volunteer divers will clear the deeper waters
while snorkelers will clear the shallower areas.

LEVEL 2:  Sea Reef Areas
With the help of diving centres the Society is establishing a weekly reporting system to identify areas
that are accumulating rubbish.  Teams of divers will then be sent out as required.

LET’S CLEAN THE SEA has already made several successful diving cleanups and  once the
reporting system is in place will continue with reef diving cleanups.  However, the biggest problem is
not usually  the diving reefs.  Divers are mostly well educated about the hazards of rubbish in an
environment that they want to keep healthy and beautiful for themselves and future divers.  The
bigger problems are the snorkelling areas and areas used for offshore dumping by boats.

Level 1 began in April 2011 with 3 days of reef clean up dives at Magawish, Fanous and Abu
Ramada.  Further outings are planned for the coming months.

The first stage of Level 2  – Offshore Areas – began on Friday 13 at the Regina Marina.  A  team  of
17 divers and 4 snorkellers spent the day in the focusing on the marina, lagoon and home reef.
Says a member of the National Parks, ‘There was a huge amount of garbage collected there,
particularly under the boat moorings!  We are returning on the 20 May to finish the job before we
move on to the next location but
WE NEED MORE PEOPLE!.  This is a huge job which will take many
months of hard work!’

So ... calling all divers, snorkelers and anyone who wants to help – join with Abu Salama and the
National Parks and LET’S CLEAN THE RED SEA!
